The Senior Staff Software Engineer creates, plans, and performs a variety of software analysis, design, development, code, documentation, integration, test and product assurance tasks. Contributes to the development of engineering design models and develops programs to enhance, implement and support project/system functionality for the assigned technical effort. Ensures technical outcomes are consistent with established engineering principles and practices and that customer and company technical, system, performance, and quality requirements are met.
Applies advanced knowledge of engineering and scientific principles and state-of-the-art practices in area of expertise to develop innovative solutions to highly complex technical problems of significant breadth, often encompassing major systems.
Routinely provides technical leadership, expert technical consultation or advice related to on-going technological advances in current product areas. Influences technical personnel, senior management, and external customers.
Conceptualizes, creates, and analyzes designs to ensure engineering projects meet technical, cost, quality, and performance requirements.
Researches, writes, and presents technical presentations to enhance the company's reputation with customers and in the technical community.
Initiates and maintains external contacts with key experts and officials of other companies, national labs, academic institutions, and government agencies.
Recommends technical approaches or designs on major projects. Assists in determining project objectives to incorporate emerging technology into products.
Performs technical analysis, testing, calculations, and evaluation of results to solve highly complex engineering problems, using specialized equipment, or by creating computer programs, models, or simulations.
Prepares, presents, and defends project technical results and recommendations to customers. Participates in or leads formal technical reviews.
Recommends Research and Development (R&D) and other technical projects in area of expertise that support the organization's strategic business objectives.
Applies systems approach to work performed; resolves conflicts within individual subsystem areas to the benefit of total system performance, cost, and quality.
Maintains familiarity with industry practices, trends and applications to enhance the organization's technical capabilities. Advises management on new developments and evolving organizational needs and required technical competencies.
May direct the work of less senior technical personnel.
Maintains a safe work environment and ensures compliance with safety objectives and policies.
Shares responsibility of self-development with immediate supervisor.
Required Skills and Education
Bachelor's degree in a relevant technical discipline (or an equivalent combination of education and experience) and 11 years of relevant experience OR Master's degree and 9 years of experience OR PhD and 4 years of experience
In-depth knowledge of products and advanced knowledge of functional or technical area
Advanced knowledge of engineering principles and practices in area of expertise
In-depth skill using current computer applications and technologies in applicable engineering disciplines
Ability to identify, define, interpret, and resolve engineering problems involving conflicting design/contractual/policy or technical requirements across functional areas and with difficult coordination requirements
Ability to prepare technical reports, papers, and presentations and deliver them in written and oral form to customers, industry leaders, and senior management
Preferred Skills and Education
Master's or Ph.D. degree
Engineering experience with relevant applications in a defense environment
Professional certification in specific engineering discipline
